Woodmancote Home
The village of Woodmancote nestles comfortably within the shadow of Nottingham Hill and the Cotswold Escarpment of Cleeve Hill. The village has slowly expanded over the years and now abuts its larger neighbour Bishops Cleeve; separated only by the Honeybourne steam railway line. Both villages are situated approximately 3 miles north of Cheltenham.
Woodmancote was first mentioned in its own right in 1170 when the then Bishop’s officers organised a thorough survey of their estates. The village has grown from less than 100 inhabitants in the 1500’s to its present population of some 2500. Many of the early buildings, albeit modernised, still exist and there are at least eighteen listed, most located in Bushcombe lane and Stockwell lane.
Woodmancote boasts two village halls (the “Old” & the “New”); the New Village Hall has an adjoining playing field and children’s play area. There are many clubs and societies within the village who make regular use of the halls and field facilities; the Woodmancote Cricket Club and the Woodmancote Society to mention but two. As you peruse this website many more will become apparent.
The village has it own pub come restaurant “The Apple Tree Inn” and lots of places to stay. There are many activities throughout the year; one of the most prominent is the annual May Day fete and precession held on the playing field and in the New Village Hall.
